I finally got to see my friend Adam (I Am Galla) the other day. It had been a few months since we last hung out. He moved into a new apartment that is super pretty! I have learned a lot in 8 months about renting in New York, which can be a nightmare let me tell you…
Yesterday I was walking out the door when I saw a note posted in my building hallway and it read something like “Residents of (insert my address here), do not pay your rent anymore because this building no longer has a certificate of occupancy.” Of course upon reading that I sort of screamed and thought… oh great, am I just going to get evicted? How will I find another place to live so quickly? It isn’t like I’ve been saving up for this to happen either. I knocked on my neighbors door and he said this was standard protocol for New York landlords as a way to get people to not pay so they can be evicted and then higher paying tenants can move in. LAME. I guess everyone’s first year in New York is full of stories like this. I just didn’t think it would actually happen.
I’m just glad that I guess I don’t have to worry about losing my apartment anytime soon but it is painful to choke up my hard earned dollars to a man that wants to mislead his tenants for $$$$.
Blah. I guess you live and learn that some people just can’t be trusted after all.
Love,
Sarah

• 11 years agowoah, that is insane about the landlord situation. so messed up. I’ve learned that NYC is the city of the highest highs and lowest lows. Hopefully you won’t experience too many lows. Just enjoy the ride I guess!
