I finally visited Finland, and absolutely LOVED it!
Finland is probably one of the most perfect places I’ve ever visited if I’m quite honest! But I’d like to start by thanking Finnair for the most epic, absolutely perfect flight experience I have ever had. We got to go on this trip as a celebration of Finland’s 100th year of being a country.
The day before we left for Finland we were treated to an Apocalyptica show in New York where we interviewed the band and got pumped for our flight the next day to Helsinki. The band was so amazingly kind and shared all kinds of insight as to what we should do! Apocalyptica is a VERY popular Finnish band and they have created songs in honor of the anniversary.
I learned a lot of fascinating things from the band such as this fun fact from Eicca: “Finnish people have some of the most diverse DNA in the world!” How crazy is that?! It’s also very helpful that people speak English in Finland as well. Paavo let us know that Finnish people were very friendly. He also suggested some restaurants by the sea. “Some restaurants have a sauna, so you can take a sauna, go swimming and then go to the bar!” “In our music you can hear quite well that it is mentality. We are quite happy but minor chords. Finnish music is really minor. The darker moods and that kind of thing.” Thank you Paavo for sharing some insight with us!
We were fortunate enough to have partnered with Finnair for this trip so we got to fly business class, nonstop direct from JFK, and it was my first time! The blueberry cocktails were Ashley and I’s favorite. Not to mention the food was absolutely outstanding! The little toiletry bags were designed by Marimekko which I absolutely love. And we experienced the nicest, sweetest flight attendant service ever. I even lost my phone in my seat and three different flight crew members (and Ashley’s arm) helped retrieve it! That will definitely appear in the YouTube video.
Helsinki is a gorgeous clean, happy and very pretty city. It is filled with so many cute little shops, vintage stores and boutiques and everything Ashley and I bought seemed very well priced for a bustling European city!
We first stayed in the very lovely Hotel Lilla Roberts. I loved the decor in the lobby, it was very welcoming and homey! For the last few nights we stayed at the MyHelsinki residence which is a Marimekko themed apartment near the city center. The residence also has saunas to use which is so lovely! There are lots of amenities included with each place we stayed.
I can’t even deal with how perfect the home stores there are. The design in Helsinki is SO MY VIBEEEEE. I love the color blocking, patterns and modern simplicity of Finnish style. Needless to say Ashley and I came back home with MUCH MORE than we brought to this trip!
We also visited a cute little market, Suomenlinna which was probably both of our favorite parts and I’d like to tell you guys more about that experience in particular!
Suomenlinna is 18th-century sea forest and it is FILLED with nature, beautiful buildings and lots and lots of epic views and beautiful open scenery. Also, lots of perfect yellow flowers which makes me swoon. You can take a ferry there from the little docks in Helsinki and it’s very easy and the ferry’s even have a bar, so we refreshed on the way back with Finnish beer that was actually brewed at Suomenlinna!
There’s so many perfect picnic spots and stopping at the little market near the ferry docks and getting fresh salmon for a picnic at Suomenlinna is absolutely perfect! The salmon and salmon soup in Finland is SO. GOOD.
