CHINO CHAT.

The fact that I didn’t quite know what type of pants “chinos” were for a while might seem silly. But once a fellow fashion writer shared this information with me, I began to better understand the chino trend that I have heard so much about. The first bit of information that I found useful is just the standard decription of chinos; 100% cotton twill pants.

How to Wear Men’s Chinos

The latest fashion of men’s chinos is still going strong, and showing no signs of slowing as we head towards the spring/summer season. Perhaps add some light colored chinos to your collection as the weather warms up – stone, grey and pale blue are all safe bets. Or, for a more fashion forward look, try colored chinos in this seasons more muted color shades of blue and berry.

Fantastically versatile, chinos will earn their place in any wardrobe. Here’s how to wear them for work and for play, to ensure you get your money’s worth:

For Work

Chinos are a great alternative to formal trousers if you don’t work in a ‘suit’ environment. Classic black chinos will always look smart. Team with a classic or slim fit shirt for a look that still means business without the stiffness of a suit.

A contrast stripe shirt will add interest if you don’t want to add a tie to your ensemble. The Contrast Stripe Slim Fit Shirt at George at ASDA is a good example. If you prefer to wear a tie for work then keep your shirt simple and let your tie do the talking with stripes, checks or texture.

A fine knit cardigan or sweater is a good alternative to a suit jacket, and will allow you to look smart while keeping comfortable (and warm during dull February and March!). A fine knit keeps the look smart and work appropriate, and will look great over a shirt and tie combination.

When wearing chinos for work, forget the shiny loafer shoes. Instead, go for a pair of smart/casual desert boots or boat shoes that will be in keeping with the slightly more relaxed work look.

Chinos will take you from boardroom to bar so are a good, smart/casual option to wear when you know you have an after-work engagement.

For Play

Chinos make a great alternative to jeans for everyday and evening wear. They also make a welcome relief from the popular skinny jean styles that have been in fashion in recent seasons.

For casual weekend daytime wear – shopping, a walk out or a pub lunch, for example – choose grey or tan chinos and layer a casual check shirt over a T-Shirt on top. Simple canvas or leather trainers will complete the look. The fact that chinos are lightweight, comfortable and typically 100 per cent cotton also makes them a good choice for summer holidays as they take up next to no weight or space in suitcases and will keep you cool and looking good. They’re especially handy for when trying to pack light to stay within a carry on baggage allowance.

For a stylish outfit for nights out, choose colored chinos in plum or blue – stay away from last season’s brights – and pair with a tight fitting black tee or polo shirt and suede boat shoes.

Don’t underestimate the humble pair of chinos – they can take you from boardroom to bar to beach. They’re the ideal versatile item to take away with you when you travel, and also make a great everyday wardrobe staple that goes with pretty much everything! Pick up a few new pairs at George at ASDA and enjoy the no hassle, no fuss additions to your wardrobe!
